From pain to purpose

Love and grief

As hard as this is to hear, grief is the flip side of love. So, whether the object of your love is a person, an animal, a place, a relationship, or anything you hold close to your heart, if you choose to love deeply (and I hope that you do), there is always the possibility that you will, at some point, grieve deeply. A beautiful sunrise means, by definition, that there will be a sunset.

The truth about grief is that it’s messy and unruly, and it definitely doesn’t obey clearly defined stages or fit neatly into any timeframe. It takes its own time and plays by its own rules (which seem to change constantly). But, and this is key, grief is not a disorder. I’ll say that again; grief is not a disorder. Grief is normal, natural, and necessary.

I would understand if you’re hoping to find a therapist who can quickly end your anguish or cure your grief. I wish I had that power. Man, do I wish I had that power. Much as I long to share magic words that would do just that, the painful truth is that there are no such words.

How I can help

What I offer is a place where your grief can be truly seen. A place to honor your love and your loss, speak without fear of judgment, cry as much and as long as you need, feel respected for the pace and shape of your grief, and be supported as you move through your unique grief journey.

While I can’t end your grief, what I can do is help you identify and practice healthy ways of acknowledging it, being with it, coping with it, and learning to carry it in a meaningful way when you’re ready to move forward.

We can talk about how grief affects (and is affected by) your:

  • Relationships

  • Spirituality

  • Hopes and plans

  • Physical health

  • Old wounds and previous experiences with loss and trauma

  • Memories of your loved one

  • …and so much more that grief touches
